National Testing Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take the computerized GRE/GMAT/TOEFL at PSU?
No. Educational Testing Service (ETS) has a contract with Thompson Prometric nationwide to provide this service. Contact the
Sylvan Learning Center's Prometric Testing Center in
NE Portland at: 503-254-4159.
When is the next testing date? When is the registration deadline?
Registration information is available for all exams on-line on the test company official website. Included in the bulletin is a registration form, sample questions, test dates,
registration deadlines, and more. See
National Testing
Companies Contact Information.
Check the registration
bulletin to make sure the test you want to take is given on the date you want to take it.
Not all tests are given on all exam dates.
Is PSU a testing site for all national exams?
No, not all exams. We currently administer the Subject GRE, Praxis,
MAT, and NBCC exams only.
How do you recommend I prepare for the test?
There is no recommended way to study for an exam. You should be aware of the following options to prepare for a test: Most national tests offer "official
study guides" for free or for purchase. Other study
guides are available at most bookstores and libraries. There may be private companies
with site offices in the local area who advertise preparation courses. Please check the phone
book or local papers for ads or phone numbers. You may also consider contracting with a
graduate student for tutoring in your weakest area (e.g., math or English). Check
with the
academic department for referral numbers. Also, check out our
Testing Services Links.
I just discovered that I need a national test to get into grad school but I
missed the deadline. Can I still take the test?
Some tests allow what is called "stand-by" registration. That
means that after all pre-registered candidates have been seated, it is determined if
there are any extra books and/or seats for stand-bys. If materials are available,
people are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Please read the test bulletin
or visit the test's official website for more information.
How long until I get my scores?
Most scores are mailed within six weeks of the testing date.
Can I take the national exams more than once?
The exams can be taken multiple times. However, be aware that when you
have your scores reported, schools will receive your five latest test scores.
There is no rule for how multiple scores must be interpreted. Please read the
test bulletin or visit the test's official website for more information.
Are accommodations available for people with disabilities?
Yes, however, each testing program has its own specific requirements. Please
read the test bulletin or visit the test's official website for more
information.
What if I read the bulletin and still have questions?
Contact the testing company that supplies the exam. See
National Testing
Companies Contact Information.
