The SAT is a three-hour standardized exam. It measures verbal and mathematical reasoning skills that students have developed over time, and that they need to be academically successful.

Many colleges and universities use the SAT as one indicator, among others, of a student's readiness to do college-level work. Other indicators include class rank, high school grade point average, personal essay, teacher recommendation, and extra curricular activities.


Eligibility

To take the Institutional SAT at PSU, you must be applying to PSU exclusively.

If you plan to apply to any other institution, you must take the National SAT, conducted through high schools and community colleges. Go to www.collegeboard.com for more information.


Fee

The fee for the Institutional SAT is $55.


Registration

Register in person: See test center location below. PSU Testing Services accepts checks or cash only. Testing Services is not equipped to accept debit or credit cards.

Register by mail: Download Registration Form. Fill out the form and mail it along with a check or money order for $55.00 to:

Mailed registration must be received by Testing Services at least one week before the exam. Make checks payable to PSU.


Test Location &Time

PSU Testing Services Office: 527 SW Hall Street, UCB Suite 310. The cross streets are SW 6th and 5th. Enter the building on Harrison or Hall, take the elevator to the third floor, and follow the signs to Testing Services.

The test session is from 9:00am to 12:30pm (approx.) Latecomers will not be admitted.


What to Bring

  • Current photo ID with a signature, ie, driver's license or passport.

  • Simple four-function or scientific calculator. Other kinds of calculators or similar devices are NOT allowed.


What is NOT allowed

Eating, drinking, and using a cell phone or any testing aids (aside from a calculator) is NOT allowed in the testing room. Using a cell phone is not allowed at all during the testing session.


Scores

Your test score will be reported to PSU Admissions and a copy will be mailed to you within 3-5 business days after the test date.

Test Content

The SAT is a paper-based exam, consisting of verbal and math sections. Click here for more information. The new SAT writing section is not currently a part of the Institutional SAT at PSU (as of 12/2004), but may be added some time in the future.


Test Preparation

While preparing for the SAT is definitely advised, Testing Services does not recommend any particular preparation method. Here are some options:

  • Prep books and software are available at libraries, bookstores, and from online booksellers.
  • Check the phone directory under "test preparation" for companies that offer test prep classes.
