Test of English as a Foreign Language The Institutional Toefl is offered once per term. The Institutional administration of the TOEFL exam is permitted only for individuals who have a relationship with the University, or anyone who has submitted an application to be a Portland State University student. Lacking this relationship, testing through the institutional program is not permitted. Scores from the institutional administration of the TOEFL are not sent to any other institution. IELP offers their own Institutional Toefl for IELP/ESL students only. The International Toefl is also offered several times per month in the Portland area. You can go to http://www.toefl.org to register to take the Internet Based Test. The cost is $60.00. Passport, proof of student or application status is required. TOEFL scores are required by more than 4,300 colleges and universities, professional schools, and sponsoring institutions. Test Content The Institutional TOEFL is a paper-based test, consisting of three sections.

What is NOT allowed Eating, drinking, and using a cell phone or any testing aids is NOT allowed in the testing room. Using a cell phone is not allowed at all during the test. Testing Rules Read the booklet given to you when you register. Be familiar with the testing rules. Two examples of standardized testing rules are: 1. You must stop writing on your test immediately after the administrator tells you to stop, at the end of each test section. 2. You must not work in any section of the test other than the section on which the whole group is officially working. 3. Violating the rules is considered cheating. If you violate any testing rule, you will be warned, and your test may not be scored. Scores 3-5 business days after the test date, you may go to the Transcripts window in Neuberger Hall and show your passport to receive your unofficial score. Test Preparation Testing Services does not recommend any particular method of preparing for the TOEFL. The following link is to the ETS Institutional TOEFL Help site: ETS advises: "...Language proficiency and writing ability can only be achieved after a relatively long period of study and practice. An attempt to study English for the first time shortly before taking the tests will not be very helpful. Familiarity with the format, however, is helpful in preparing for the test."
